Startup Weekend Education Returns to Orlando in July

Orlando Startup Weekend EDU is coming back for the third Startup Weekend Education in Orlando, July 11th-13th at Valencia College’s West Campus. Startup Weekend EDU is an intense 54 hour event which focuses on building a web or mobile applications focused around education, which could form the basis of a credible business over the course of a weekend. The weekend brings together people with different skill sets – primarily educators, software developers, graphics designers and business minded – to build applications and develop a commercial case around them. Startup Weekend EDU is where innovation meets reality.

I’ll be serving as an organizer this time (my ninth Startup Weekend as mentor too). See for yourself what happens by watching this great documentary by FilmScape Production on the first Startup Weekend EDU Orlando.

Startup Weekend Orlando EDUAll Startup Weekend events follow the same basic model: anyone is welcome to pitch their startup idea and receive feedback from their peers. Teams organically form around the top ideas (as determined by popular vote) and then it’s a 54 hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation.

The weekends culminate with presentations (The Pitch) in front of local entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback. Whether entrepreneurs found companies, find a cofounder, meet someone new, or learn a skill far outside their usual 9-to-5, everyone is guaranteed to leave the event better prepared to navigate the chaotic but fun world of startups.

This tends to be one of the smaller Startup Weekends but it provides the same great experience of developing a real world taste of entrepreneurship, networking, growing, and learning. I would love to see more students and fellow educators involved in this type of event.  Interested? Put July 11-13, 2014 on your calendar: http://orlandoedu.startupweekend.org/
